TPMS for Boat Trailers — from the ramp to the highway.
Boat trailers sit for weeks, get dunked at the ramp, then run loaded at highway speed. That's a hard life for tires and bearings. A boat trailer TPMS with waterproof sensors shows every tire's pressure and temperature in your cab, so trouble shows up before the trip goes sideways.

Three things that wear out boat trailer tires
Months parked, then 70 mph
Boat trailers sit between seasons, losing pressure and developing flat spots. The first fast, loaded run is when weak tires give out.
Water gets into bearings
Dunking hot hubs in cold water can pull water past the seals. A bearing going bad heats the wheel — and that shows up on the TPMS temperature readout.
Small wheels spin faster
Many boat trailers ride on small-diameter trailer tires, which turn more revolutions per mile and build heat fast when under-inflated.
Hot hub = stop and check: if one wheel's temperature climbs well above its axle partner, pull over and feel the hub carefully. Catching a bearing early can save the axle, the hub and the trip.
Which TPMS fits your boat trailer?
Count the trailer tires, then add your tow vehicle if you want it on the same screen.
| Boat trailer | Tires | Recommended kit |
|---|---|---|
| Single-axle, trailer + truck | 2 + 4 = 6 | Solar Powered TPMS or GRUNDIG RV TPMS (6-wheel) |
| Tandem-axle, trailer only | 4 | GRUNDIG RV TPMS (4-wheel) |
| Tandem-axle, trailer + truck | 4 + 4 = 8 | GRUNDIG RV TPMS (8-wheel) |
| Triple-axle, trailer + truck | 6 + 4 = 10 | GRUNDIG 550S or Grundig S08 (10-wheel) |
| Triple-axle behind a dually | 6 + 6 = 12 | Grundig S08 (12-wheel) |
Using a TPMS on a boat trailer
A few habits keep sensors working season after season:
- Check every sensor and lock nut is tight before backing down the ramp.
- Let hot hubs cool for a few minutes after a long drive before launching, when you can.
- Rinse with fresh water after every saltwater launch — wheels, hubs and sensors.
- Watch temperatures on the drive home. A wheel heating up after a launch points to water in the bearing.
- Before storage, inflate to the sidewall pressure; before the first trip, wake the monitor and recheck every tire.

TPMS for Boat Trailers FAQ
Can TPMS sensors go underwater at the boat ramp?
Grundig external sensors are IP67-rated, which covers temporary immersion — the kind of dunking a wheel gets during a normal launch and retrieve. They aren't meant to sit submerged for long periods, so don't leave the trailer parked in the water.
Is salt water a problem?
Salt is hard on everything on a boat trailer. Rinse the wheels, hubs and sensors with fresh water after every saltwater launch, just as you rinse the brakes and lights.
Can a TPMS warn me about a failing wheel bearing?
Indirectly. Water in a bearing leads to friction and heat, and that heat shows up as a high temperature reading at that wheel. If one position runs much hotter than its axle partner, stop and check the hub before it seizes.
My boat trailer sits most of the year. Is TPMS still worth it?
That's exactly when it helps. Trailer tires lose pressure in storage, and the first highway run of the season is when a soft, sun-aged tire is most likely to fail. The monitor shows every cold reading before you leave.
How many sensors do I need for a boat trailer?
One per trailer tire: 2 for single-axle, 4 for tandem, 6 for triple-axle. Add 4 if you want your tow vehicle on the same screen.
Should I remove the sensors before launching?
For normal launches, no — IP67 sensors are designed for it. Check that each sensor and lock nut is tight before you back down the ramp, and rinse after use.
