The TPMS warning light can mean several different things — and the right response depends on which one. Here's how to tell them apart and what to do about each.

The TPMS warning light — the horseshoe-shaped symbol with an exclamation point on your dashboard — is one of the most commonly misunderstood warning indicators in modern vehicles. Most drivers assume it means a tire is flat. It doesn't, necessarily. It means something is happening with your tire pressure that the system wants you to know about — and that something could be anything from a tire that needs 5 PSI of air to a sensor that has failed entirely. Knowing what the light is actually telling you determines the correct response, and getting that response wrong can cost you a tire, a sensor, or both.

One or More Tires Is Underinflated

The most common reason. The TPMS light triggers when a tire drops 25% or more below the vehicle's recommended cold inflation pressure. On a vehicle with a 32 PSI specification, the light typically comes on at around 24 PSI. The fix is straightforward: add air to the correct pressure, drive for a few minutes to allow the system to update, and the light should go off.

Temperature Drop Overnight

Tire pressure drops approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F of temperature decrease. If your car sits outside overnight when temperatures fall significantly, the tires may drop below the alarm threshold by morning — even though they were correctly inflated the day before. In this case the light often goes off on its own after 10–15 minutes of driving, as the tires warm up and pressure rises back above the threshold.

A TPMS Sensor Has Failed or Lost Battery Power

When a sensor's battery depletes or the sensor malfunctions, the vehicle's TPMS module loses the signal from that position and triggers the warning light. This is different from a pressure alert — the light is on because the system has lost contact with a sensor, not because a tire is actually low. A TPMS diagnostic tool can identify which sensor has failed.

The System Needs a Reset After Tire Service

After tire rotation, new tire installation, or sensor replacement, the TPMS system may not automatically recognize the new sensor positions or updated pressure baseline. The light stays on until a reset or relearn procedure is performed. This is not a pressure or sensor failure — it is a calibration issue that requires resetting the system.

TPMS Control Module Fault

Less commonly, the vehicle's TPMS control module itself malfunctions. This typically shows as a TPMS fault message rather than just the warning light, and requires diagnostic scanning to identify. Module faults are not resolvable by adding air or resetting the system.

Should you keep driving when the TPMS light is on? If the light came on while driving and you have not hit anything or noticed handling changes, the immediate risk is lower — but you should check tire pressures at the next safe opportunity. Do not drive long distances on a tire that is visibly low or soft. If a tire has lost significant pressure while driving, pull over safely and inspect before continuing.



Limitations of the Factory System

What the TPMS Warning Light Doesn't Tell You

The factory TPMS warning light has a critical limitation: it only tells you that something is wrong, not which tire or exactly how wrong. Most vehicles with indirect TPMS systems do not display individual tire pressures — you get a single light that covers all four tires.

This means that when the light comes on, you have to check all four tires manually to identify which one is low and by how much. You also cannot monitor tire pressure in real time — the light only activates when a threshold has already been crossed, not as pressure is developing toward a problem.

Will the TPMS light go off on its own?

Can I reset the TPMS light myself?

You can reset the TPMS warning light using the reset button (usually located under the steering wheel or in the settings menu) — but only after correcting the underlying cause.
