HOW TO CHOOSE

6 things that decide the best RV TPMS for you

Work through these in order. The first two narrow the choice to one or two models; the rest fine-tune it.

1 · Pressure range

Max PSI vs your tires

Read the max cold pressure on your sidewall. Under ~100 PSI, 116 PSI sensors are fine. At 110 PSI+ (Load Range G/H), choose 200–217 PSI sensors so tires running hot stay inside the sensor range.

2 · Wheel count

Count every tire you tow

Add the RV's tires to the tow vehicle's or toad's: 8 for a truck and tandem trailer, 10–12 for a dually and fifth wheel, more for commercial rigs. Pick a kit with modes that cover today's setup and the next one.

3 · Signal range

Can it reach the back axle?

Long rigs, aluminum walls and steel frames weaken the signal. Grundig uses 433.92 MHz radio, which travels farther than Bluetooth; past about 30 ft total length, add a signal booster mid-trailer.

4 · Power

Solar, USB-C or hardwired

Solar displays (Solar TPMS, 550S) need no cable on the dash. Type-C models (RV TPMS, S08) recharge from any USB port. The 860 runs on 12V/24V — ideal for trucks and fleets.

5 · Sensor type

External or internal

External sensors install in minutes and have user-replaceable batteries. Internal sensors are hidden inside the tire and need a tire shop to fit — best when you're buying new tires anyway.

6 · Alarms & limits

Per-axle alerts matter on big rigs

Every Grundig system alarms on high and low pressure, high temperature and fast leaks. The 550S and 860 add independent limits per axle — useful when steer, drive, tag and trailer tires all run different pressures.

Rule of thumb: pressure range first, wheel count second. If a model can't read your tire pressure or can't cover all your wheels, nothing else on the spec sheet matters.

TWO FLAGSHIPS

550S vs 860: which big-rig system?

Both cover large rigs with 200 PSI sensors and per-axle alarms. The difference is how you use them.

Choose the 550S if…

  • You run one rig and keep the same trailer hooked up.
  • You want a solar display with no wiring to the dash.
  • You need up to 36 tires covered on one screen.
  • You want to swap tire positions on-screen after rotations.

Choose the 860 if…

  • You drop and hook different trailers and want saved profiles.
  • You prefer a 5-inch color touch screen on 12V/24V power.
  • You need more than 36 positions — up to 110.
  • You want the optional GPS edition with speed and trip data.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Choosing an RV TPMS: FAQ

What is the best RV tire pressure monitoring system for most RVs?

For most travel trailers, Class B and Class C motorhomes and mid-size fifth wheels running under 116 PSI, the GRUNDIG RV TPMS is the best fit: it switches between 4, 6 and 8-wheel modes, so one kit covers the RV alone or the RV plus a tow vehicle or toad.

Do I need a 116 PSI or a 217 PSI system?

Look at the max cold pressure on your tire sidewall. Under about 100 PSI, a 116 PSI system is enough. At 110 PSI or more — common on Class A diesel pushers and heavy fifth wheels with Load Range G or H tires — choose 217 PSI sensors (S08 or the Solar TPMS) so hot running pressure stays inside the sensor range.

External or internal sensors — which is better?

External sensors screw onto the valve stem and install in minutes; batteries are user-replaceable. Internal sensors mount inside the tire, so they are protected from theft, weather and road debris, but need a tire shop to fit. Most RV owners start with external sensors.

Why do the 550S and 860 list a shorter signal range than the other models?

The 550S and 860 figures describe a typical in-vehicle range through cabin furniture and metal walls, while the 40 m figure on other models is open-air. That is why the 550S and 860 include signal boosters on larger kits — on long rigs, every model benefits from a booster mounted mid-trailer.

Can one display monitor more than one trailer?

Yes, with the GRUNDIG 860. It saves each trailer's sensors as a profile, and you pick the trailer you're pulling on the touch screen — no re-pairing. Other models pair sensors to wheel positions, so they suit a rig that stays the same.

How many sensors do I need for my truck and trailer?

One sensor per tire you want to watch. A pickup plus a tandem travel trailer is 8; a dually plus a tandem fifth wheel is 10; a dually plus a triple-axle is 12. Larger commercial combinations need the 550S or 860.

How long do the sensor batteries last?

Grundig external sensors use replaceable CR1632 coin cells — about 12 months on the RV TPMS, Solar TPMS and S08, and about 2 years on the 550S and 860. The monitor flags a low battery at its wheel position.

Can I install an RV TPMS myself?

Yes. External-sensor kits install in 10–30 minutes with the included anti-theft nuts and wrench: power on the monitor first, set your pressure limits, then screw each sensor onto its valve in the on-screen order.
